Class Exercise #2 - Scaling Type

Objectives:
  1. Understand form and proportions of type
  2. Understand type measurements and scaling
  3. Reinforce anatomy of type and vocabulary
  4. Familiarize yourself with one of the classic typefaces
Specs & materials
  1. grid paper
  2. pencils, sharpeners, erasers, etc.
  3. ruler (small size)
  4. money on panther card to print
Process:
  1. Using between 6-8 letters, type your name using one of the five classic typefaces introduced in class
    1. Garamond – Old Style
    2. Baskerville – Transitional
    3. Bodoni / Didot – Modern
    4. Century Expanded / Century – Egyptian
    5. Helvetica / Gill Sans / Futura – Sans Serif
  2. Open Indesign
  3. Create new document with
    number of pages = 1,
    page size = letter, landscape orientation
  4. Set type in 72pt, create outlines and then center on page
  5. Check with me if you are unsure about typeface, style, size, etc.
  6. Print out document
  7. Recreate your name on your grid paper at 144pt with pencil (this is 2x its original size)
    Try redrawing your original 72 pt type on the grid so that you can see how it fits into grid and then redraw at double proportions…

Deliverable:
Pin up pencil drawings for discussion at 5pm. Submit work at the end of class.
